DR. SHEELA UNNIKRISHNAN – Happiee Birthdayyy to our dearest Sheela Ma’am!
alokaye sri bala Krsnam
sakhi ananda sundara tandava Krsnam
I (literally) have no words to express my respect, love and admiration towards this very special person who has really changed my life in sooo many ways. She made me realise that I should shape my career into what my heart wants to and not how others want me to. Coming back from dance class never feels the same if Sheela Ma’am didn’t come to class that day (which is very rare, of course) From being the strictest and unerring ‘teacher’ to the cutest, generous and playful ‘kid’, she is EVERYTHING to all of us at SDN. In short, Sheela Ma’am is what makes SDN, “SDN”.
This pose is from ‘Alokaye sri bala Krsnam’ tarangam performed by Ma’am in her Kuchipudi Rangapravesam recently. Which is another thing (I could go on and on about this). I don’t remember ever sitting in the audience and crying, watching a dance performance. But I did on this day. Was it out of adoration? Respect? The music? The movements? The abhinaya? Choreography? The chemistry between the orchestra and the dancer? I have no idea. But it was definitely a very, very, verrryy goosebumpy morning altogether. It was. Really.
.
If you still haven’t watched her Rangapravesam, the live stream is still available on Sridevi Nrithyalaya’s YouTube channel. It wouldn’t come close to the real auditorium experience, but still.
.
I just want to say that I’m extremely lucky to be her student and learn more than ‘dance’ from Sheela Ma’am. Thank you ma’am, for everything.
