Durga Devi is popularly known as Mahishasuramardhini for slaying the half-buffalo demon Mahishasura, who received a boon from Lord Brahma that only a woman can kill him. Because of the torture and destruction caused by Mahishasura, Devas sought the help of the Trimurti. The Trimurti combined their power and a warrior Devi with many arms appeared. Himavan gifted a lion as Her mount. Durga, on Her lion, appeared before Mahishasura where the demon took on different forms and attacked the goddess. Every time, the Goddess would destroy his forms. At last, Durga slew Mahishasura with Her trident, thus the name ‘Mahishasura Mardhini’. 🙏🏻❤️
The Mahishasura Mardhini Stotra by Sri Adi Shankara written in Her praise, is one of the most widely known stotrams of the Goddess.
