3. What is Artificial Kidney / Hemodialysis?

Ans:

  • Kidneys are vital organs for survival.
  • Infections, injury and restricted blood low may cause the poisonous wastes to get accumulated in the kidney.
  • This can lead to death.
  • In case of kidney failure, an artificial kidney can be used.
  • An artificial kidney is a device to remove nitrogenous products of blood through dialysis.
  • Artificial kidneys contain different tubes with semi permeable lining, suspended in a tank of dialysing fluid.
  • This dialysing fluid consists of the same osmotic pressure as that of blood, but is devoid of nitrogenous wastes.
  • The patients blood is passed through these tubes.
  • During this passage, waste products of blood pass into dialysing fluid by diffusion.
  • The purified blood is sent back to the patient’s body.

4. How do plants get rid of their wastes?

Ans:

  • Oxygen itself is a waste in plants
  • Plants get rid of excess water by transpiration
  • Plants wastes are stored in cellular vacuoles in some leaves, they may fall off later.
  • Other waste products are in resins and gums
  • They may be shedded to soil too.
